About Us

Offering Australian specialty malts

Travelling around to visit breweries and distilleries, it’s amazing to see how many producers use specialty malts from overseas. Yes, they are excellent products. But wouldn’t brewers and distillers prefer to use an Australian product instead? Enter AMSAT - specialty malt specialists.

So, why have we chosen to specialise in specialty malts? Firstly, there is a need for high quality Australian specialty malts. Malts that are Australian, fresh, and do not have to travel around the globe to get here. Secondly, we love them! They are the most interesting malts to make and experiment with. And finally, it’s right in our wheelhouse. We know roasting better than most, and our equipment and IP sets us up perfectly for success in this area.

So, who are we then?

Australian Malting Services and Technology (AMSAT) are a small but mighty team dedicated to producing Australian specialty malts. We have over 60 years’ combined experience across multiple areas of the beverage industry, including malt, wine, whisky, barrels, roasting, and brewing. We love what we do, love the industries we get to work with, and are here to add value to the brewing and distilling industries.

From our headquarters in Adelaide, South Australia, we manage the entire process – from sourcing local grain, to the malting and roasting, right through to packaging the final products.

Uniquely, AMSAT is fully HACCP accredited. HACCP is a risk management methodology used by the food and related industries for the control of food safety hazards. This means that our products are produced in compliance with the highest Australian food standards.

People

Simon - Amsat Malt
  • Simon is the sole owner and the Managing Director of AMSAT. Simon comes from a family of winemakers, is a qualified winemaker himself, and has completed vintages around the country. He also has degrees in Applied Science, Engineering, as well as an MBA.

Outside of work, Simon is married with two young daughters, and owns a large and energetic puppy.

  • Andrew is the Sales and Marketing Manager and newest member of the team, having recently joined AMSAT from the barrel industry. Andrew has several years’ experience supplying high end barrels, foudres and vats, as well as concrete and terracotta vessels to brewers and distillers across the country.

Outside of work, you’re likely to find Andrew at a local cellar door or brew pub with his partner and their two daughters.

  • Joe is the Technical Manager at AMSAT, and this is his tenth year at AMSAT. Joe has a degree in Applied Science (Chemistry and Microbiology) and cut his teeth at a leading international food manufacturing company. Joe looks after our product trials and HACCP accreditation.

Outside of work, Joe is married with 2 grown-up children. He is a passionate and dedicated hobby winemaker but has made (and will make) anything that is fermented or distilled.

  • Nenad is the longest serving member of the team, having worked at the company since the very beginning. Nenad is our roasting savant! Having overseen the roasting of our products for decades now, there is nobody in the industry with Nenad’s set of skills or expertise. He runs our roasters with passion, a cool head, and the intuition that only comes from thousands of roasts under your belt.

Outside of work, you can find Nenad spending time with his beloved grandchildren, or with a fishing rod in hand.

  • While not officially part of the AMSAT team, Richard grows our Barley in the picturesque Adelaide Hills, bespoke for our floor-malting needs. Richard, Simon and Andrew have been friends for almost 30 years, having all gone to school together in Adelaide. By working closely with the AMSAT team, we can all contribute to varietal selection, barley specs, and storage methods to ensure only the highest quality malt leaves our door.

Richard is most looking forward to drinking a beer made with his barley!
